My mind offers me constant reminders of my absolute best badass life. It’s sometimes like a dreamy visioning session that feels like a warm blanket, and sometimes I’m in the deep experience of not having what I want and it’s terrible and disempowering. What’s interesting here is that, either way, I am focusing on it. Either way, it is taking up 80% of my brain space. And I am either giving it productive attention, or I am giving it destructive attention.
When I find something gnawing at my mind, with enough time, I get fed up. I get tired of experiencing frustration, resistance, and not-having. And from this place, a great commitment to change comes. A commitment to becoming the person I’m envisioning. To free myself into the next level. It all becomes conscious, and I move into action.
When I was 32, this came together in the context of my body. For years, it felt like 80% of my brain would be gnawing on the look of my body, the feel of my body, and what it meant about me. It was like inner torture. I remember times in my early 20’s that I didn’t want to go out with friends because I felt fat. I remember texting a friend once, “Okay, I’m going to come, but I’m going to get dressed and not look down at myself once the whole night.” I remember knowing how many calories were in everything (still do). I would feel funny taking second servings at meals if I was in a social setting, judging myself, feeling embarrassed.
And then one morning, at ripe 32, I could not stand it any longer. I wanted my brain back. I wanted to STOP worrying about my body, and start enjoying it! Loving it! And a great commitment came over me to heal and shift. I began a journey to absolute freedom, and it worked. I claimed my extraordinary life. Below are the steps I took. These steps will work for any vision you have of your most badass life.
Clarity.
There are many things we want in life. A healthy body, a strong career, a full bank account, a well trained dog. It is supremely helpful to choose one area of focus at a time. When you work on 5 things at once, there is a level of dilution in your powerful attention. When you prioritize one thing, the power of your mind and emotions can settle and really get to work at 100%. Look at the things in your life that are major complaints or desires. Which one thing, if you focused on it now, would make everything else easier? Where is your mind spinning its energy out most often? Where is there the most pain, or the most desire? Choose that one thing.
Fierce commitment.
Fierce commitment is a feeling in the body that contains two components: 1) a fiery power, like the way you could imagine a mother protecting her children, and 2) a deep solidity in the body. Being an absolute stand for yourself, is the jumping off point. Being clear that here and now things change, and that you are worth it, and that you are more than capable of doing it. Stomp on the ground. Power pose with your shoulders back. Give your body the information about where you are mentally. Things change starting NOW.
Emotional freedom.
What to work on next: everything emotional that is in the way. Emotions are movable and shiftable. Beliefs are too. When I committed to freeing myself from my relentless worries about my body, I woke up every morning for the next 3 days, and tapped. I excavated my mind for every upset emotion, every limiting belief, and scrubbed it with commitment and great love for myself. This looked like 30 minutes each morning, of deep deep feeling it, and deep deep healing it. I tapped on thoughts that sounded like “I’m disgusting,” “I don’t know how to eat normally,” “I’m gross.” I felt them deeply, tears streamed down my face, and I met them with a feeling of great love. When a feeling of pain meets a feeling of love, the alchemy of emotional release occurs. Here is a video on tapping 101 to get you started with tapping. Steady, focused attention.
Depending on what you’re working on, it could take a week, a month, or months to create the shift you want. It could also take one day. It could be gone one day, then come back a week later, and require more attention. The key here is that you stay deeply committed, and keep your attention on your shift. You are rising above your emotions and thoughts. You are not believing them as true. You are observing them as old programming, and setting them free. If it takes 6 months of waking up and tapping for 30 minutes, then that’s what it takes. If the outcome after 6 months is a lifetime of feeling free in your body, and having a clear open mind, what a win! Don’t shift your focus until the work is done. Keep steady, focused attention.
Practicing new programming.
Immediately begin to train your mind and emotions to be your allies on your journey. Practice 1) Generate the emotion you want to feel about the thing you’re after before you even have it. This is a mindfulness practice, and it’s also brain training and emotional training. You can dedicate as little as 3 minutes to it once a day. On purpose focus your mind on imagining the desired feeling. Your body will listen to your mind and begin to generate that feeling for you. The more you practice it, the more your body is being entrained into new emotional programming that will work in your favor. Practice 2) I find that listening to guided meditations or guided hypnosis recordings is a lovely supplement to reprogramming the thoughts that are running through your subconscious mind by default. YouTube is rich with recordings like these. Find a couple that are specific to the kinds of thoughts you want to train into your mind. It is very powerful to listen to a recording like this right as you are falling asleep at night. You set your mind into motion in a very productive direction that it invests in while you rest.
